Hashtag Opera Company is a new wave of Opera Company - an opera collective made up of professional singers, conductors and instrumentalists planning performances together via the social networking sites Twitter and Facebook. We do it for the love of it!
Founded in 2012, Hashtag Opera Co started with an "Opera Twala" - a gala concert of arias and duets. This was followed by a concert performance of Don Giovanni with piano. We've expanded to bring instrumentalists into the fold, with our first fully orchestrated performance of Verdi's Giovanna d'Arco, performed in January 2015. In 2015 we also performed St Matthew's Passion with orchestra, as well as a scaled down concert (with piano) of Carmen. We set out to inspire our audiences with an alternative approach to opera. Using social media, we organise concert performances of rarely performed operas (as well as a few popular gems) to perform "on the fringe". We believe in opera for all. Come see what we're about at one of our upcoming performances. "The cheers of “Bravo!” that begin and end the opera are well deserved, and so is the standing ovation. A self-funded company, the proceeds from all the ticket sales are split equally amongst all the performers to help them further their careers.
